“Thank you donor” appreciation day was organized for the first time today. Mongolia performed the first kidney transplant operation in 1996. This operation has been performed continuously since 2006, although it has been discontinued for a while.
Donors are divided into two categories: living and non-living. A non-living donor saves eight lives while a living donor saves one life.
In 2018, the Law on Donors was newly approved in Mongolia. Since that time, health organization that is identifying non-living donors has increased constantly. As of today, The First Central Hospital of the State successfully transplanted 342 kidneys, 239 livers, 32 bone marrow stem cells while the National Cancer Research Center transplanted 128 livers.
According to new law, if three family members of a brain-dead donor agree, their tissues and organs can be transplanted to blood-type-matched patients on the waiting list. The waiting list for people who need organ transplants exceeds 1,000.
