Grants will be given to 300 families affected by blizzard

As for today (20 February), nearly 80 percent of the Mongolian territory has been covered by heavy snow. Specifically in some areas, the snow thickness is 100 cm.

Due to the heavy snowfall, 21 soums of Uvs, Uvurkhangai, Sukhbaatar, Dundgobi, Dornogobi provinces have been experienced iron zhud. Iron zhud results from a short wintertime warming, followed by a return to sub-freezing temperatures. The snow melts and then freezes again, producing an impenetrable ice-cover that prevents livestock from grazing.

Nationwide, as of February 18, around 667 thousand head of livestock have died. Officials has informed that the most livestock have died in Sukhbaatar, Khentii, Dornogobi, Arkhangai, Dornod provinces.

Mongolian government decided to give 660 thousand tugrik and 200 tonns of livestock feed for every 300 families in three soums of Sukhbaatar province as grant. And “World vision” international organization is working to implement the project for three soums that hit by zhud disaster.
