A record 1900 young athletes from 79 countries who qualified for the IV Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will gather in Gangwon Province, Korea in 14 days to compete for 81 sets of medals in 15 disciplines of seven winter sports.
According to the rules for granting Olympic rights approved by the International Olympic Committee and the International Sports Federation, 12 qualified athletes will represent Mongolia namely, six in biathlon, four in cross-country skiing, and two in alpine skiing for the first time.
Alpine skier M.Manlaijav and biathlete D.Nyamsuren will be the flag bearers of the Mongolian team. Minister of Foreign Affairs B.Battsetseg was appointed as the leader of the team by the decision of the Executive Council of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee (MNOC).
Historically, from Mongolia, two athletes each participated in cross-country skiing and skating in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and in 2016 in Lillehammer, Norway. Also, six athletes competed in cross-country skiing and biathlon at the Olympics held in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The MNOC provided a total of MNT 447 million in financial support for the training of the athletes participating in the Winter Olympic Games and a series of competitions to qualify for the Olympics.
