The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia and the Global Green Growth Institute launched survey titled Climate Change Awareness and Media Consumption Survey in Mongolia.
When asked if climate change is a priority, 85.7% of respondents said the country needs to take urgent action on climate change. The survey, the first of its kind in Mongolia, aims to identify opportunities to increase knowledge and promote positive attitudes and practices among the population and vulnerable groups. According to existing information, climate change will have severe impacts on Mongolia’s population of 3.4 million people, with changes already being felt. Over the last 80 years, the average temperature has increased by 2.36°C, and precipitation has decreased by 7%. Since 1960, the frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters have increased 2.5 times.
Key findings of the survey include that 67.9% of people across the country reported observing changes in the environment and weather patterns, with 82% stating that these changes are worsening forests, water, and their surrounding environment, including the diversity of plants and wildlife. The survey also revealed that 92.7% of respondents were concerned about climate change, indicating a high demand for reliable and consistent information related to climate change. Only 9.9% of people interviewed reported awareness of strategies to address the consequences of climate change. The survey showed that people in the Gobi Desert zone noticed the changes in weather patterns the most (81%), whereas in the Taiga zone, the changes were noticed by 41.5%.
