According to EastFruit, in the 2022/23 season, small landlocked country Mongolia with 3.3 million inhabitants, located at more than 7 thousand km from Poland, has suddenly become quite an important market for the Polish fresh apples.
According to preliminary estimates, from August 2022 to July 2023, Polish apple exporters were able to deliver from 15 to 17 thousand tons of fresh apples to Mongolia, and Poland was able to again become the main supplier of fresh apples to this country, bypassing even China, which is Mongolia’s neighbor and a global leader of fresh apple exports. It should be noted that apple imports to Mongolia increased by 40 percent in the previous season, while Poland, which was the leader of this market a season earlier, increased exports to Mongolia by 15 percent. In 2022/23 the volume of fresh apple imports to Mongolia from all destinations was estimated by EastFruit experts at 27-30 thousand tons.
Why exactly are exports of fresh apples from Poland to Mongolia attract attention, except, of course, for the incredible logistical difficulties of such shipments?
First of all, because it turns out that small Mongolia has become almost as important market for Poland as it is 20 times larger in size and 21 times in terms of per-capita income, and 5 times closer than Great Britain. Probably, the secret lies in the quality of the Polish apples, which does not always pass the quality standards on the shelves of the UK supermarkets but allows it to successfully maintain leadership in the Mongolian market.
