On 6 February, 7.8 magnitudes earthquake occurred in southern Turkey and norther Syria, and thousand of casualties have occurred. In response to a global call for assistance from the Turkish government, the first batch of members of Mongolian Disaster Relief Team immediately set off for Turkey. The plane carrying rescue team of 35 people as well as 1.500 woolen blankets, ten tonnes of meat, two tonnes of candles and other aids flown to Turkey.
Separately, Mongolian citizens launched foundation campaign entitled ‘One world-One family’ for Turkey people. The foundation organisers built 16 yurts on Sukhbaatar square, center of Ulaanbaatar city. It is planned to build 100 yurts in future. These yurts will be delivered to the countries by MIAT.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths has urged countries around the world to help the thousands of people left homeless and starving in the wake of the devastating earthquake that rocked Syria and Turkey at dawn on February 6.
The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria has reached 33,000 people.
