Kyrgyzstan to learn from Mongolia for tackling air pollution

Kyrgyzstan’s MP Emil Toktoshev said that the country must learn from Mongolia which solved air pollution within 2 years, at plenary session of the Parliament of on 14 December. Mongolia developed a National Program to Reduce Air Pollution, which was implemented in two phases from 2017 to 2018, and then from 2018 to 2021. New efforts focused on banning the use of low-quality coal in the capital and replacing it with recycled fuel, improving the energy efficiency of buildings by insulating them, and introducing feed-in and zero electricity tariffs at night during the heating season. The consumption of raw coal in the six central districts of Ulaanbaatar has been replaced by the consumption of briquetted fuel since May 2019 to improve air quality.

MP Emil Toktoshev named three main causes of air pollution in Kyrgyzstan. There are problems with stove heating, where unripened Kara-Keche coal is burnt, with heating baths, thermal power plants, when using low-quality fuel and lubricants machines.

MP Zhusupbek Korgonbai uulu added that the air pollution is caused by faulty cars, low-quality coal, rubber and plastic burnt in housing estates.
