Earlier today (7 December), 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Sainshand city of Dornogobi province in Mongolia, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said. The quake had a depth of 15 km (9.32 miles). EMSC had earlier reported the tremor was as much as 5.6 with a depth of two km.
In January, 2022, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the western Mongolian province of Govi-Altai. The quake was felt strongly across the province, and there is no immediate report of damage.
According to the National Statistics Office, 56 occurrences of 3.5 magnitude or stronger earthquakes were recorded in 2020, but 255 quakes have been reported last year. Compared to 31 earthquakes in 2010, the number of occurrences increased by eight times in the last decade.
