Mongolia becomes the first Asian country to join the EU Forest Partnership

President of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Forest Partnership during the participation in COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh. Mongolia became the first Asian country to join the EU Forest Partnership.

The Memorandum of Understanding is aimed at supporting the main steps of sustainable forest management, such as reforestation, proper use and protection, and the creation of economic sectors and sources of income based on forests.

The parties agreed to cooperate on expanding employment opportunities in forestry, manufacturing value-added products, attracting foreign investment, increasing forest protection zones, reducing desertification and degradation of forests, protecting biodiversity and species, and developing intensive animal husbandry.

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding, the support system for the long-term sustainable use of forest resources in climate change adaptation and mitigation will be reformed, and good governance and sustainable management will be supported.
