Mongolia to meet its domestic wheat and potatoes demands

Mongolia has harvested plenty of wheat and potatoes this autumn that can fully secure its domestic demand, according to the country’s ministry of food and agriculture.

According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industries, Mongolia will be able to meet its domestic demand for wheat and potatoes. This autumn, the country is expected to harvest a total of 441.400 tonnes of wheat and 234.100 tonnes of potatoes; an increase of 31,800 tonnes  and 73,200 tonnes respectively compared to last year.

Mongolia is expected to harvest  125,800 tonnes of vegetables and 55,700 tonnes of oil plants, respectively up 32,200 tonnes, and 7,200 36,400 tonnes compared to last year.

Earlier in the year, farmers were given fuel, wheat for planting and fertilizer to help meet the targets. This formed a part of the Ministry of Manufacturing and Agriculture’s campaign to fully supply the domestic wheat market.

Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world with a population of around 3.4 million, and a large portion of the population makes a living on raising livestock.
