Mongolia on the brink! New surge kills almost 500

Mongolia is struggling to bring the coronavirus pandemic under control, with almost 500 COVID-19 deaths so far. In a country of just 3.3 million, this is very worrying.

Ever since local transmission was confirmed late last year, Mongolian doctors has been fighting with all their strength. However, the healthcare system is now teetering on the brink, with many hospitals unable to handle the relentless inflow of patients whilst also running short of beds, oxygen and ventilators.

Today (24 June), Mongolia confirmed 13 deaths of Covid-19 in just 24 hours; bringing the total number to 482. Unfortunately, three people in their 30s, five people above 80 and five other aged 51-79 have lost their lives due to the virus while receiving treatment in hospitals.

Separately, 2366 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in a day; this brings the total count to 102632.

Earlier Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene promised a ‘Covid-Free Summer’ calling Mongolians actively participate in a vaccination rollout started in mid-February. So far, 1.9 million people have received their first doses of the Covid-19 vaccines; 1.7 million have now received both jabs. Furthermore, 1316 pregnant women, 919 breastfeeding women, some 20,000 children aged 16-17 have received first doses of vaccines within a week.

Mongolia will start vaccinating children above 12 years against coronavirus infection from Monday (28 June).
