U.Khurelsukh, the candidate from the Mongolian People’s Party triumphed in the Mongolia’s presidential elections, which were held on June 9th. He became the first candidate in recent history to win more than two-thirds of the vote. His party already holds a supermajority in parliament. After Mr Khurelsukh takes office on June 25th the party will have an even stronger hold on power. Therefore, parliament has approved an inaugural parade for U.Khurelsukh who will become the 6th President of Mongolia. With the presence of 3200 troops, minimal crowds will attended the parade on Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Khurelsukh was Mongolia’s Prime Minister until January, when he resigned suddenly taking responsibility for handling Covid-19 situation in the country. Under his leadership as PM, decisive steps were taken in fighting the virus; these included the very early closure of borders and banning mass gatherings – as a result there was zero local transmission until November 2020. Political analysts explain Mr Khurelsukh’s snap departure as a move to become legible to put his candidature forward for the 2021 Presidential Election.
