Doctor T.Munkhsaikhan has returned his surgical room at the National Trauma and Orthopedic National Centre after resigning from the post of Health Minister of Mongolia. T.Munksaikhan is now working as a surgeon implanting artificial knee joints and undertaking microsurgery at the hospital.
He was appointed as Health Minister on 8 July, 2020 and worked hard tackling the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
However, in late January there was a political crisis resulting in the resignation of PM U.Khurelsukh and his Cabinet. Just over a week before, on January 20 images appeared on social media of a woman and her newborn baby being transferred to a COVID-19 quarantine facility, with the woman dressed only in a hospital gown and flip-flops in the bitter cold. The public outcry was intense, with people demonstrating on Sukhbaatar Square next to the State Palace and calling for resignations. On 29 January – despite their effective management of the pandemic (no local transmissions until November 2020 and less than 10 deaths) – U.Khurelsukh and his Cabinet resigned. As health minister, T.Munkhsaikhan, resigned also.
Before accepting government office, T.Munkhsaikhan worked as surgeon from 2011 and as a director-general at the National Trauma and Orthopedic Center in 2016-2018 and director-general at the First Central Hospital of Ulaanbaatar.
