Myanmar crisis: Mongolians desperate to get out

On Sunday (28 February), Myanmar’s security forces launched their most violent and deadly crackdown on peaceful demonstrators since the 1 February coup by the military junta. At least 18 people died and more than 30 were injured, according to the United Nations Human Rights Office, as police attempted to extinguish a month-long nationwide protest movement against the generals who had ousted the democratically elected government of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

According to the Director General of the Consulate Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs L.Munkhtushig, there are 14 people residing in Myanmar who have registered with the Mongolian Embassy in neighbouring Thailand. Six Mongolians, including a family in the city of Mandalay have applied to return home following the military takeover. Unfortunately, there is no Mongolian diplomatic mission in Myanmar. In addition, international flights to Myanmar have been cancelled.

Currently, the Mongolian Embassy in Thailand and the Mongolian Foreign Minister are cooperating to repatriate the nationals from Myanmar.
