A vehicle registration plate, also known as a number plate, license plate, is a metal or plastic plate attached to a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes. All countries require registration plates for road vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

Mongolia is a place where people are very superstitious about the power of numbers – for good or ill;  most consider that some bring luck. Therefore, lucky number plates are sold for high prices. For example, newly issued plate numbers such as 0001 UAR, 0011 UAR, 0041 UAR, 1441 UAR, 7171 UAR and 1001 UAR have been sold for a total of MNT 682.700.000.

The most expensive plate number was 0001 UAR. It was sold by MNT427 million in an auction organised by Mongolian auto transportation authority.
