Mongolia cancels Lunar New Year wrestling for second year

The traditional annual wrestling competition for Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year) was suspended in 2020 in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This was the first time in generations that the much-loved wrestling competition has not taken place.

Now, the traditional wrestling tournament for Lunar New Year has been cancelled again for second year running!

Previously, as we reported, the Mongolian Wrestling Federation announced that the cherished event would be held at the Wrestling Palace in Ulaanbaatar on 11 February. The wrestling tournament involving 128 traditional Mongolian wrestlers with state and provincial titles would be run under strict guidance and regulations from the State Emergency Commission (SEC) and the Emergency Commission of the Capital City (ECCC). Now, Mongolians will have to wait another year.

The Lunar New Year, which is the nation’s most important family festival, will take place from 12-17 February.
