Lunar New Year Wrestling to be held without audiences

The traditional annual wrestling competition for Tsagaan Sar (Lunar New Year) was suspended in 2020 in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This was the first time in generations that the much-loved wrestling competition has not taken place.

However, this year, the traditional wrestling tournament for Lunar New Year will go ahead – but without audiences! The cherished event will be held at the Wrestling Palace in Ulaanbaatar on 11 February. The wrestling tournament involving 128 traditional Mongolian wrestlers with state and provincial titles will be be run under strict guidance and regulations from the State Emergency Commission (SEC) and the Emergency Commission of the Capital City (ECCC).

The Lunar New Year, which is the nation’s most important family festival, will take place on 12-17 February.
