A new law is soon to come into force aimed at reducing the prison population of Mongolia. Instead of prison, people who have committed minor crimes and first–time offenders will be monitored and have restricted their movements in some locations. Therefore, the Mongolian judicial system will begin using electronic monitoring of criminals.
Some prisoners with light sentences, especially those who have chronic diseases, women and people aged above 60 will be released on parole in 2021 as the law comes in force.
