As part of a programme to decrease traffic congestion, Ulaanbaatar city officials have been extending the school bus services. Therefore, 40 mini-buses have begun transporting pupils between their homes and schools on 35 routes in the capital since 15 November, 2019.
Earlier this week, five new school buses that meet international standards have been showcased on Sukhbaatar Square as part of the next batch of 200 school buses for 2021. According to B.Otgonsukh, project manager of Road and Transportation of Ulaanbaatar city, the yellow buses with 52 seats produced by Donfen Company each cost USD 130,000. However, it has been revealed that the buses are sold each for USD 43,000-45,000 on Alibaba. Thus, Ulaanbaatar city officials are being accused of money laundering from school bus purchases.
Ulaanbaatar City Development Corporation announced a tender in May for importing school buses and four companies applied for the project. Monnis International the tender.
