When the Coronavirus crisis started at the beginning of the year, Mongolia was one of the first countries to respond, by closing its borders and grounding its international flights.
Following a first charter flight to Wuhan – the epicenter of the pandemic – to rescue Mongolian students trapped there, the country has repatriated some 20,000 of its nationals by air, rail and road. To date, Mongolian citizens have been brought home from 53 countries around the globe.
Meanwhile, the plight of many Mongolian nationals living abroad remains difficult; due to the pandemic, many have lost their sources of income. Currently, a total of 12,461 Mongolian nationals staying abroad have applied to return home.
