Hungarian Government takes care of Mongolian students stranded in the country

At Ulaanbaatar’s request, the Hungarian Government has stepped in to provide financial support and accommodation to the Mongolian students who are stranded in the country. As we reported yesterday, the Mongolian students, who have completed their university studies in Hungary, have faced huge problems and material hardship after being unable to return home at the end of the last academic year.

Mongolia suspended entry to the country at all border crossings in March – even for its own citizens in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection. As a result, the students could not come home neither could they received their scholarships any longer. A total of 240 Mongolian citizens, including 78 Mongol students, have been stuck in Hungary since the introduction of the restrictions. Frustrated students and others have been demonstrating in front of the Mongolian Embassy in Hungary since early July.

The Government of Hungary has been providing scholarship to 200 Mongolian students each year since 2018.

The 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Hungary will be marked at the end of 2020.
