Buda Musique has announced the August 28, 2020 release of Jangar, an album by Mongolian sextet Khusugtun. The group performs a modern and polyphonic exploration of the traditional overtone singing from Mongolia.
The particularity of Khusugtun lies in the utilization of vocal polyphony, a recent innovation in the Mongolian throat singing tradition.
The ensemble accompanies itself with the morin khuur (horse-head fiddle), ikh khuur (double bass), tovshuur (lute) and dombra, guitar, cello and a zither called yatga. In addition, Khusugtun uses instruments with play on overtones, such as mouth harp in metal (tumur khuur) and bamboo (khulsan khuur), as well as the musical bow called numan khuur.
