Known as Przewalski’s horses, the ancient species has narrowly avoided extinction thanks to breeding programmes at zoos worldwide and the re-introduced to a wildlife reserve in the animal’s original homeland. Now, the population of the unique breed has reached 100 across the Mongolian steppe. The first 12 wild horses returned to Zavkhan Province in 2004 from a French zoo, ten in 2005 and four in 2011 from the Czech Republic.
This year, the first foal was born on 6 May and was named Rubin.
