A new fountain constructed on the south side of Sukhbaatar square has opened today (19 June) amidst public criticism. The fountain, worth MNT 3.2 billion, has been constructed on the 1.6-hectare Green Park under a decision by the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar. Work on the fountain began in April amidst fierce public opposition regarding the removal of the original trees in the park and spending a hefty MNT 3.2 billion for a fountain which will only operate during the short summer months. All of this has happened during the pandemic lockdown.
Originally, the fountain had been expected to open on 1 June. However, the event was postponed due to the need for more operational tests and the avoidance of public gatherings.
