2.1 million Mongolians to vote in parliamentary election

The State Registration Authority has registered a total of 2.1 million eligible voters for the upcoming parliamentary election to be held on June 24. Mongolia’s eligible voting population can be divided by age to 324,000 people aged between 18 and 24, around a million aged 25-45 and 740 thousand people aged over 45.

However, those Mongolians who are under isolation for observation of coronavirus symptoms will be unable to vote. According to the Law on the COVID-19 Pandemic, Mongolia has no option but to curb the constitutional rights of some people for the sake of protecting national security and public health. With an aim for preventing and mitigating any financial and economic risks, the pandemic law was approved by parliament and will be in force for just the duration of the crisis.

A total of 2070 polling stations have been set up in nine districts of Ulaanbaatar city and across the country’s 21 provinces. Due to the parliamentary election, local migration has been suspended since 1 February, 2020, thereby prohibiting the registration of members of the public changing their address.
