Pandemic Election: Mongolia’s voting spending rises

The pandemic is playing havoc with elections worldwide. Because of Covid-19, Britain, France, North Macedonia and Serbia have already postponed ballots of various sorts. However, Mongolia will follow South Korea’s example of casting votes amid the pandemic. By successfully holding the first national democratic election following the spread of Covid-19, South Korea has both provided a model for other democratic election processes and a possible counterweight to those who believe democratic systems will fail under the weight of the public health burdens imposed by the virus.

Mongolia will hold its parliamentary election on 24 June. On Wednesday (27 May), the Mongolian Cabinet approved an additional budget of MNT 2 billion 496 million for sterilization of polling stations and providing protective clothing to electoral workers. The money comes from the Government Reserve Fund.

As of today, Mongolia reported 148 confirmed cases of coronavirus; all of them are imported; there are no locally transmissions.
