The Ulaanbaatar City Administration hosts the “UB International Marathon” annually on the third Saturday of May. Also, this day is well-known as being a “car-free day” in the centre of the Mongolian capital to promote public health and sports. However, this year, the Ulaanbaatar marathon has been postponed amid restrictions preventing the coronavirus pandemic. Mongolia has cancelled all sports competitions and cultural events since mid-February.
The Ulaanbaatar International Marathon aims to develop sport, promote healthy life styles, and encourage strong mental and physical habits and practices.
The marathon is becoming ever more famous as the number of runners and international guests increases. The marathon has been held since 2014 when over 16 thousand people attended. Last year, more than 400 runners from 30 countries including Japan, the USA, Australia, Canada, Malaysia, China, Kenya and others ran; athletes of Kenya, Ethiopia and Japan took the prizes.
