Killer storm forecast in Mongolia

The National Agency of Meteorology and Environment (NAME) has issued a warning for blizzards and storms throughout the country from 14-20 May, with maximum wind speeds reaching 34 m/sec. It looks as if it will be a repeat of 2008, which left people and livestock dead across the country.

According to the reports, blizzards and storms with wind speeds of 18-20 m/sec are expected in central and western parts of Mongolia on 14-15 May, and 18-20 m/sec in central and eastern parts on 16-17 May; high winds of 26-28 m/sec with gusts of up to 34 m/sec, are forecast for the  Gobi desert area. In particular, residents living in Khentii, Sukhbaatar, Gobisumber, Dornogobi and Dundgobi provinces needs to prepare for the worst and not to travel or herd livestock.

L.Oyunjargal, director of the ‘Prevention Division’ at NAME, warned that the blizzards and storms will be same as the 2008 natural disaster that killed 52 people and 324 livestock.
