Mongolia protecting its rich Bronze Age heritage

Mongolia is rich with archaeological sites that belong to the Bronze Age. These are mostly khirgisuurs – or burial mounds, other types of tombs, petroglyphs, and stone sculptures such as the famous deer stones.

Currently, the Mongolian Government is implementing a national programme entitled ‘Cultural Heritages on Stone. The programme aims to register, preserve and protect stone Bronze Age sites nationwide. For example, over 1000 rock paintings at 10 locations have been registered in Gurvantes Soum of the South Gobi Province alone.

Deer stones are unique monuments dating to the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age that are found mostly in Mongolia and in some Central Asian countries. The first research into the deer stones was conducted over 100 years ago. So far, about 1200 deer stones have been discovered.
