The Mongolian province of Zavkhan, located in the west of the country, is implementing many new projects aimed at become a net meat producer and not a consumer.
For example, a new meat producing plant with a daily capacity for slaughtering and processing 500 sheep and goats and 150-200 cattle is being constructed in the Tosontsengel soum of Zavkhan province.
The new plant will create up to 50 full-or-part time jobs. The plant will export meat in the long term.
Livestock husbandry is Mongolia’s economic pillar, supporting the livelihood of nearly 40 percent of its nomadic population.
Official data show the country has more than 230,000 herder households with livestock. The livestock population totaled 70.9 million at the end of 2019.
