As for today (23 March), a total of 21,000 Mongolians have returned home following the rapid spread of coronavirus in China and 190 other countries. Mongolia has closed its borders with China and Russia and suspended flights until 30 April in order to prevent COVID-19 disease. Currently, Mongolia has 10 confirmed cases of coronavirus all of whom entered the country on evacuation charter flights and from Russia via two entry points. However, the country decided to no longer receive its citizens through the Tsagaan Nuur and Altanbulag Border Crossings as of 23 March.
Mongolia has evacuated some 1000 people from South Korea, Japan and Europe with government chartered flights; nine of them have been confirmed as having coronavirus. Mongolia’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 was a 57-year old French national.
Nearly 190,000 Mongolians live or study in over 80 countries.
