Mongolia’s first playground for children with disabilities

There are 105,730 people with disabilities living in Mongolia; 35589 are in Ulaanbaatar. Like everyone else, they have the right to work, being happy and to pursue their dreams. However, the social welfare system, facilities and environment designed especially for people with disabilities are sadly lacking in Mongolia. For example, so far, there are no playgrounds designed for children with disabilities in Ulaanbaatar.

Therefore, the Mongolian Rotary clubs has initiated a project to build the first ever playground designed for children with disabilities. According to Ganbat Erdene, Deputy Assistant Governor of Area 10, Rotary International District 3450, a special playground is planned to be built on a 1700 square meters area in the National Park in the Bayanzurkh District of Ulaanbaatar. Officials from the National Park have supported the initiative of building the playground.

So far, 60 percent of the project cost of MNT 150 million has been raised from contributions by Rotary members. The clubs have organized many events step-by-step for raising the remaining money. For example, ‘Aida’, the famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi, was performed at the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Mongolia on 2 November, 2019; half the money from ticket sales was donated to the project.

The first Rotary club was founded in Mongolia in 1995. Since then, the clubs has implemented many projects such as planting gardens over 500 hectares area with a project called ‘Keep Mongolia Green’, saved the lives of more than 300 children with ‘Children’s Heart Project’, and provided testing for over 30 thousand women from 21 provinces for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer with ‘Test for Life’. It was also spend USD 9.9 million on education.

If you have any questions regarding the project, or would like to donate, you can call numbers: (0976) 94001333, 80114768. The Rotary Information Center is located at 13th floor of the Union Building.
