Choijin Lama Temple included on international list

Choijin Lama Temple has been named as a one of the 25 culturally important sites on the 2020 World Monuments Watch list of threatened heritage sites with historical significance by the World Monuments Fund. The list is updated every other year.

“We often take our most treasured heritage sites for granted,” said Bénédicte de Montlaur, the fund’s CEO. “Sometimes it’s not until they are put at risk that we realize the importance they have in constucting our identities as individuals, communities, or citizens of a country.”

The 25 sites, which were chosen from a list of more than 250 nominations, join a list of 836 watch members recognized since 1996. Their supporters will compete for a total of $1 million in conservation funds provided by American Express, a founding sponsor.

Currently, an American architect, Steven Kelly is working at Choijin Lama Temple as a part of ‘Heritage’ scholarship programme. Steven Kelly is a famous architect and engineer who has devoted these two skills to the preservation of the buildings which make up our cultural heritage

In the heart of Ulaanbaatar, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum (Choijin Lama Monastery) houses an ensemble of five small attractive temples with elaborate paintings, colourful masks, and ornate statuary, including several sculptures engaged in tantric sex. The monastery was built between 1904 and 1908 for the Choijin Lama, a brother of the Bogd Khaan who became Mongolia’s state oracle and last spiritual and temporal ruler of the nation.
