From today (21 October), the public in Ulaanbaatar can use automated pedestrian crossings. Known as Pelican crossings in the UK and HAWK crossings in the US, six button operated traffic lights have been installed at six junctions between Yarmag and Chinggis Khaan International Airport.

The self-controlled pedestrian crossings change to green after 15-20 seconds enabling the public to cross. Because the lights will only chance if pressed, they will remain green for drivers when there is nobody around.
