Major Mongolian folk festival aims to attract 20000 tourists

A major folk festival is to be held in the southern province of Dundgovi on 9-11 August to attract more tourists.

The traditional folk festival entitled ‘The Sun Over the Placid World’ will be held at an open-air theater in the Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, which is a granite rock mountain range in the Gurvansaikhan (Three Beauties) district of the province.

A total of 3,000 players of the morin khuur – also known as the horse-headed-fiddle, a traditional Mongolian bowed stringed instrument – and traditional long song singers and from Dundgovi are expected to attend the festival, according to an official. The festival is expected to attract 20000 people.

Dundgovi is located in the south of the country about 240 km from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. The province is nicknamed “the land of songs and music” because many famous Mongolian singers come from the province.
