Third Mongolian PM to be arrested by anti-corruption body

Former Mongolian Prime Minister M.Enkhsaikhan was imprisoned yesterday (20 June) at Detention Centre No. 461 after being called by the national anti-corruption body to give testimony over an ‘unsigned’ agreement regarding the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine project. He was accused of trying to grant Energy Resource LLC privileges over others on the project. If the agreement had been signed, it would have likely been to the economic detriment of Mongolia.

The former prime-minister was called after three witnesses gave testimony. One of them was S.Erdene, leader of the Workers’ Union at Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi.

M.Enkhsaikhan has recently returned from Stockholm, where he has been serving as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Sweden since 2017.

M.Enkhsaikhan served as the prime minister of Mongolia from 1996 1998, the first in 80 years not belonging to the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party.
