‘Ug’ and the Mongolian media revolution

There are currently 127 cable TV channels, nearly 100 sites and nine daily newspapers actively operating in Mongolia. These are very high figures when one considers that  market is three million people – far less, in fact, when one deducts children. To purge the dross and put quality first, some media agencies have united to bring about a revolution in the Mongolian press. Entitled ‘Ug’ – meaning  ‘Word’ – a union of professional media rooms is being established with the aim of purifying the  nation’s press and protecting professional media.

Currently, the following Mongolian media agencies have united in the ‘Ug’ professional media union:

www.shuud.mn.

‘Ug’ demands that Mongolian media organisations must meet certain criteria to join the union. For example, they must announce major stock holders and provide ownership details. In addition, 60 percent of all content must be prepared by their journalists.
