The Special Olympics for people with intellectual disabilities were held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates on 14-20 March. Nearly 7500 athletes from over 190 countries competed in the Games. A total of 28 people including coach and athletes from Mongolia successfully took part. Team Mongolia won three golds, seven silvers and eight bronzes.
Since the establishment of the Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing. However, it is recognized that the number of potential athletes with intellectual disabilities who need to be reached out to is staggering.
