A delegation of Mongolian lawyers held a press conference earlier today (27 February) demanding the resignation of Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs Ts.Nyamdorj. They also called for a public apology. The lawyers are seeking justice after a well-known Mongolian female judge died whilst in custody at a detention center. At the beginning of the press conference, they noted that this was not first time that a person has died in custody. They said that Constitution states that Mongolia should build a humane society. However, is there any real guarantee for the safety of the lives of its citizens? In other words, the Mongolian government is becoming a ‘terrorist’ organisation which is unable to protect the lives of citizens’ . Subsequently, the lawyers demanded that the National Security Council hold an emergency meeting in order to present guidelines over protecting citizens’ lives.
Judge L.Byambaa died at Detention Centre 461 after being arrested by the Independent Authority against Corruption on 22 February. According to a source, L.Byambaa’s body was found on 23 February strangled by her own brassiere in a room of the detention centre. She had only five hours left to being released when the 48 hours custody period ended.
