Remembering the victims of road accidents in Mongolia

Earlier today (29 November), Ulaanbaatar’s chief thoroughfare, Peace Avenue, was closed for five minutes road between the East and Western Four-way Intersections and drivers honked their car horns loudly. This was neither a traffic jam or a demonstration, but, an act of remembrance for the victims of road accidents. The Ulaanbaatar City Transport Police Department of has declared Thursday as ‘day for trying to be safe on the roads and avoiding accidents’.

Every day, 15-16 people are injured,1-2 of them fatally, on Mongolia’s roads. Over 6000 people were injured and more than 500 people died because of road accidents in the five years from 2014 and October, 2018.
