Suicide rates cause alarm in Mongolia

Mongolia registered a total of 2055 cases of suicide between 2012 and 2016; this means on average 411 people kill themselves each year. Suicide is 5.2 times higher among Mongolian men (1729) than women (326).

Most importantly, the suicide rate has been increasing year by year among young people under the age of 29. According to doctors and psychologists, suicide has become a leading cause of death among Mongolians aged between 15 and 34. The rising suicide rate could become a “threat” to the national security.

Suicide is listed as the 12th leading cause of death worldwide in WHO statistics. However, in Mongolia, it has become the number one cause of death among working-age people, said R.Enkhtuvshin, a doctor at  the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH).

The Mongolian Police have reported that suicide cases have increased over the last month with three or five people committing suicide in the same day.
