At today’s session of parliament, B.Batzorig, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industries, reported that the number of Mongolian livestock has reached 84.4 million. However, MP M.Bilegt commented that the Mongolian government needs to focus on quality rather than number of livestock. He said, ‘Mongolia has been regulating economics based on livestock, which has been considered a national treasure for thousands years. But, government policy on livestock has taken the country back over 20 years since Mongolia adopted the democratic system. Currently, herders are aging and number of young people who want to live in countryside and herd livestock, is decreasing. If there are no herders left, then Mongolia will have lose its national treasure.
In response, Minister B.Batzorig said, ‘the Mongolian government has been focusing on increasing the number of livestock. Now, we are trying to increase the export of livestock and meat. This year, the number of Mongolian livestock reached 84.4 million animals after the birth of 18 million animals in 2018. Mongolia currently has 168 thousand herder families.’
