Earlier today (5 September), the Mongolian Cabinet took the decision to reconstruct the road between Ulaanbaatar-Darkhan. The road will be enlarged to a four lane highway from April, 2019. The core funding for the reconstruction project will come from the Asian Development Bank.
The main road between Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan was first built in 1970-1980 and repaired in 1997-2000. It is in a very poor state of repair and has caused many accidents. About 12300 vehicles use the Ulaanbaatar-Darkhan road at peak times; this far exceeds the design capacity which only allows 600 vehicles.
