With over 60 million head of cattle, the livestock sector could be the most profitable in Mongolia. However, the country has been thwarted in realizing the sector’s full potential due to problems exporting meat for animal health reasons.
Nevertheless, Mongolia exported a total of 22971.6 tonnes of meat in the first seven months of 2018 which generated USD 50.6 million. This represents an increase of 2.6 times on the previous year. Recently, Iran has become one of biggest importers of Mongolian meat as the country’s sheep and goat meat shipments in the first half of 2018 quadrupled year-on-year to 775.6 tons.
