Depending on the wind direction, the bad smell from the wastewater treatment plant is a serious problem in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, during summertime. As more tourists are coming to the city, this is a matter which needs to be addressed. To solve this and other problems, a new wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 250,000 cubic meters – double than the old one, is to be constructed in the city. The project is being financed by the Chinese EXIM Bank.
Mongolia is also planning to use the methane gas emitting from waste water to generate electrical power; in addition, the purified waste water will be used in Thermal Stations III and IV.
The construction of the new plant is expected to begin next spring and to begin operation in 2020.
