The first Danshig Naadam was held in 1639 to celebrate the enthronement of High Saint Zanabazar as the first Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu and the spiritual leader of Mongolian people. It is one of Mongolia’s major religious and cultural events.
‘Danshig Naadam- Khuree Tsam’ Festival will be held on at Khui Doloon Khudag on 4-5 August. The festival is organized by Governor’s Office of Ulaanbaatar in cooperation with the Gandantegchinlen Monastery.
The annual festival which is held annually on the first weekend of the August will feature various events including a debate between monks, tsam performance, raising of the Soyombo banner, a performance of religious songs, a wrestling tournament between 256 strongmen, horse racing for animals above five-years of age, a trotting march and equestrian archery.
The ‘tsam’ performance is considered as the main feature of Danshig Naadam. During the event over 120 people wearing enormous and glorious masks and heavy ornaments dance the roles of deities with different characters such as Ochirvaani (Vajrapani), suppressing the enemies and subduing the evil spirits with fierce movements.
