The ‘VI International Festival- Morinkhuur Competition’ is to be held in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, between 30 June and 5 July. The event is being organised by the World Morin Khuur Association, which was set up by presidential decree in 2002.
The ‘morin khuur’, often translated as ‘horse-headed fiddle’ is the most famous Mongolian musical instrument, and resembles a two-string rectangular cello; it is also played with a bow.
Morin Khuur specialists, along with players from Russia, China, Japan, the USA, South Korea, Germany and France will participate in the festival. The competition will be held in two stages among with Morin Khuur amateurs with the first stage of the contest taking place at the Mongolian State Philharmonic concert hall on 1 July. The overall winner will be awarded MNT 1 million and a trophy, the runner up will get MNT 800 thousand and third place gets MNT 500 thousand.
During the festival, morin khuur competitions, international morin khuur artists’ concert, meetings and discussions as well as exhibition of the beautiful instrument will be held.
