A Bactrian camel was born in Toledo Zoo in Ohio, United States on 6 May. It is named Zehra, which means ‘bright’ in Mongolian. The zoo says Zehra has curly gray hair and has two small humps that will fill out as she grows. Zehra was born to parents Sasha and Cash at 64 pounds and standing at about 3 feet tall. She is the first camel born at the zoo in recent years, and she is the fourth Bactrian camel in the zoo’s herd.

Erik Regazzoni, Curatorial Fellow of Mammals with the Toledo Zoo tells ‘Bactrian camels are sturdy animals, eventually growing up to eight feet tall and weighing as much as 1500 pounds! They’re found in Mongolia and central Asia, so they’re built for harsh weather. ‘They are very well-adapted for cold and hot environments found in the deserts of the Gobi up there in Mongolia.’
