Mongolia will host the Nomad Wrestling Competition at National Sports Stadium in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, on 2 June. The competition is being organised by the ‘Khamag Mongol’ studio in cooperation with the ‘Javkhlant’ club. Wrestlers from Inner Mongolia, Buryatia, Tuva and Mongolia will participate in the competition.
The competition is organised every 10 years; this is the second such event – the first being held in 2008.
Wrestling is the most important of Mongolian culture’s traditional ‘Eriin gurvan naadam’ – normally translated as the ‘Three Manly Skills’, that also include horsemanship and archery. Chinggis Khaan, founder of Mongol Empire, considered wrestling to be an important way to keep his army in good physical shape and combat ready.
