‘Capital City of the Steppe’ is the name of an exhibition about the ancient Mongolian capital city of Karakorum which has opened at  Museo d’Arte Orientale in Turin, Italy.

The exhibition has already attracted many visitors who have discovered much about the capital of the Great Mongolian Empire. During the exhibition the Department of Archeology of the University of Turin agreed to implement a ‘Cultural Education’ programme for school children in the Kharkhorin Soum (district), where Karokorum once stood.

The 800th anniversary of the founding of Karakorum will be marked in 2020.

The exhibition was co-organized by the Kharkhorin Soum Administration, the Karakorum Museum, the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology of the National University of Mongolia, the Institute of Archeology of Mongolian Academy of Sciences and the Mongolian-German ‘Karakorum’ expedition.

Karakorum was one of the most important cities in the history of the Silk Road. Although founded by Chinggis Khaan in 1220, Karakorum’s development as capital of the Mongol Empire occurred in the 1230s under his son Uguudei.
